How the media convinced voters that
children are the cause of a crime crisis:
A case study
A deep dive into the propaganda techniques used by Queensland businesses to convince the community that we need more prisons, more surveillance, more funding and more laws.
About the “Youth Crime” case study
This independent research project has included a spreadsheet, a collaborative and evolving art project in multiple stages, a zine, panels and presentations, an Instagram account and future planned activities to highlight the propaganda crisis using the ‘youth crime’ campaign as a case study.

The Art Project – Pt 1
A collage of 2024 articles on a 2.2m pin board timeline, this collaborative art piece was made and displayed at Banshees from Nov 2024 to Jan 2025.

The Zine
The YCPC Zine is available for $10 suggested donation per copy from events, or coming soon in the online store, in local libraries, or for free by request.

The Art Project – Pt 2
A collage of 2023 and 2024 articles on a 3.7m collage timeline, an expansion of the original pin board piece showing the build up of pre-election marketing.

The Spreadsheet
An ongoing work in progress, featuring 850+ articles so far with a url, title, publication name, owner, location and journalist where available.

Exploring the anti-youth campaign
I’ve been reviewing articles that use the moral panic campaign term ‘youth crime crisis’ since 2022, collecting them in a spreadsheet and presenting the data in a variety of ways to show how children are used to justify funding for prison businesses, surveillance businesses and police.

Radio Reversal – Unpacking Youth Crime Crisis
26 June 2025
G’day Zedgends! This morning on Radio Reversal we’re returning to one of our favourite topics to rant about – the state government’s imaginary “youth crime crisis,” the “Adult Crime, Adult Time” laws, and the creeping carceral expansion that we’re watching unfold in the present moment under an electoral mandate of “community safety.”

Paradigm Shift – Paperbark Zine Fair
4 July 2025
Today we are talking zines! To get ready for the Paperbark Zine Fair, I speak to Bernie from the Australian Anarchist Zine Archive, plus 4ZZZ favourites Anna (Radio Reversal) and CJ (Locked In) about their alter egos as zine makers.
